No Name - Calling Week January 21 – 25

In 2004, GLSEN and Simon and Schuster were inspired by a popular young adult book by James Howe - “The Misfits” to create No Name - Calling week. They recognized that although the characters in the book were fictional, name - calling was a growing problem within our schools. As a result once a year schools encourage their students through educational activities to stop calling each other out of their names.

CRC teaches that name - calling is a harmful form of bullying. It is behavior that can lead to low self - esteem, stress and anxiety for the student being bullied. A student who feels the stress from constant name - calling may find it hard to concentrate on schoolwork and subsequently their grades may decline. Because bullying behaviors take away from the learning environment for students, CRC would like to encourage school communities to participate in this very important week.

We also realize that the real challenge is to keep up the momentum of the week throughout the school year so that no student, at any time feels the hurt experienced by being called names. If your school participates in No Name - Calling week and still feels a need to do more work in bullying prevention and intervention, CRC would love to help your school build a more inclusive and safe environment that will last throughout the entire year.
